Raysa Ortega was born in the Dominican Republic and has lived in the U.S. since 1987. She is a single mother of three and grandmother to one. Raysa began her law enforcement career the summer of 2013 with the VWW Step Up to Law Enforcement program. By October 2013 she was hired as a temporary correctional officer at the Chittenden Correctional facility, becoming a permanent employee by December of that same year. March of 2016 she was offered the position of Correctional Officer II, which a supervisory training role. May of 2016 she tried out for and made the cut for the facility Special Response Team (SRT), regarded as the best in the state, making her their only female on the team to this date.
During her free time, she is dedicated to fitness and community service. She is currently an Executive Council member for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run movement. She supports the American Cancer society with their plane pull event by raising funds. In 2016 and 2017 she coached Girls on the Run. She has also completed 8 marathons to-date and began Dragon boating in 2013, currently paddling for Boston’s Living Root.
