Vermont Works for Women

Step Up to Carpentry

This six-week program for women interested in careers in carpentry offers participants hands-on skills training and experience in addition to employment skills and extensive employment support. VWW works with successful graduates of the program for up to a year as they seek positions with our employer partners. The spring 2009 class in commercial and residential carpentry wove sustainable, or ‘green’ building practices throughout the curriculum.  Topics included:

  • Resource extraction
  • Material selection
  • Location
  • Site considerations
  • Waste diversion
  • Energy
  • Health
  • Durability
  • Recycling

We look for women who are interested in learning the trades and can commit to an intensive, six-week program and begin work upon completion of the training.

The Step Up To Carpentry program includes these primary components:

  • Women’s Resources Topics – general employment and retention skills
  • Trades Training Topics – issues related to the trades in general as well as specific skills in both carpentry/construction and painting
  • Job Shadows – participants work alongside employer partners at commercial and residential job sites for two to four days per participant over the course of the program.
