Rosie’s Girls® Lead Trades Instructor
Rosie’s Girls® helps middle school girls and gender non-conforming youth develop grit, connection, and expanded possibilities through carpentry and welding projects paired with social and emotional skill development activities. The three-person staff operates in a collaborative team environment to support and supervise 12 campers in all of the program activities during each one-week camp. While we welcome out-of-town applicants, as a nonprofit program we are unable to provide summer housing. Vermont Works for Women camps are open to girls and gender non-conforming youth. Additionally, we strive to accommodate youth of all ability levels.
- Provide advanced technical knowledge, assistance, and oversight with all welding and/or carpentry equipment and its use to both staff and campers;
- Work collaboratively with the entire staff team;
- Act as a leader and mentor to program participants;
- Support Junior Instructors;
- Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and encouraging STEM learning environment for all participants;
- Ensure sound risk management practices in every aspect of the program. Adhere to and implement the policies and procedures set forth by Vermont Works for Women;
- Form positive and respectful connections with participants;
- Be creative and flexible, especially in regards to problem solving and brainstorming innovative ideas;
- Communicate clearly with participants, parents/guardians, and staff.

The Rosie’s Girls® staff team is a collaborative powerhouse; we hire instructors who are aware of their own strengths, can complement the skills of others, and are excited to try out new leadership roles. We’re looking for candidates who say “That’s me!” to any combination of the following:

Not only are people comfortable talking with you, you also know how to help people connect with one another. You can break apart cliques, support campers in resolving their conflicts, help new and healthy friendships form, and give campers tools to support each other.
- A Spontaneous Motivator: You have a way of motivating and energizing others. You have ways of encouraging others to find the joy, excitement, and connection in activities and games. Even though you may be sparking the interest, ultimately it’s the youth-driven problem solving that fires you up.
- A Teacher-on-the-Fly: You’re a natural when it comes to public speaking and teaching. Standing up in front of a group to teach a lesson, giving quick instructions, and guiding group conversations are well within your comfort zone. Although you sometimes may be “wingin’ it”, no one can tell with your clear and concise syntax.
- A Safety Patroller: You’re eager to try new things and encourage others to do the same. However, you always approach situations with an eye for risk management. Through sound judgement and decision-making, you’re able to help folks understand risks so they’re not only able to use a power tool safely, but they’re also able to make healthy decisions outside of your supervision.

Education and Experience:
- 1+ years working with middle or high school-aged youth in any capacity;
- 2+ years trades experience 0r NCCER certification or equivalent certification/degree; Weld: experience using welders, preferably MIG. Experience using a plasma cutter desired. Build: experience using power tools such as chop saw, jig saw, power drill, etc.;
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of pre-adolescent and adolescent girls’/gender non-conforming youth’s social and emotional development and the issues facing this population;
- Familiarity with and comfort responding to a variety of social justice and cultural issues (racism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ableism, etc.).
- Preferred: knowledge of and experience with youth-driven, project-based learning.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check;
- CPR and First Aid certification (can be obtained after hire).
- Ability to operate welding/wood shop equipment
- Ability to lift up to 20 lb of raw materials and/or camper projects

Staff Training (at Center for Technology, Essex: June 24-26, 2020). Preference will be given to instructors who can work all weeks of a given program and/or both programs:
