Distribution & Maintenance Supervisor

ABOUT THE POSITION:

At Vermont Gas Systems (VGS), the Distribution & Maintenance Team does important work. They ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services to over 55,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. The Distribution & Maintenance (D&M) Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily operations of maintenance and replacement projects on the distribution system.  They lead a team of highly skilled Working Foremen, Gas Technicians, Operators, Welders, and Locators. They model leadership by example, demonstrate a commitment to safety, exhibit excellent technical skills, and build collaborative teams. 

 

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION?

  • Supervises and coordinates the daily operations of maintenance, replacement projects, and limited new construction projects on the distribution system. This includes assisting in the planning and executing projects for steel main, service, and fitting replacement projects. 
  • Leads a team of highly skilled employees and cultivates a safe, productive, respectful, and collaborative working environment.
  • Ensures employees receive effective training to perform their work safely and competently.  
  • Contributes to the process of hiring new team members. 
  • Oversees the performance of the team and coaches’ individual employees as needed.
  • Understands and follows terms outlined in the IBEW Local #300 Working Agreement.  
  • Explores and implements ideas for continual process improvements on the distribution system to enhance safety and reliability.
  • Facilitates relationships between VGS and contractors, second and third party.  Creates healthy partnerships with communities and individuals inside and outside of our distribution territory.
  • Provides field support for Working Foremen, contractors, and vendors. 
  • Ensures compliance with all DOT and applicable codes for distribution pipeline systems through VGS’s Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and oversees compliance surveys and various other maintenance programs or activities.
  • Coordinates and schedules employee training on maintenance procedures, tooling, and equipment.
  • Oversees the development and compliance of Operator Qualification (OQ) training for covered tasks within the department.
  • Assists in documenting and updating procedures for current and new equipment use. Communicates procedures and policies to team members.
  • Participates in the evaluation and approval of non-standard installation of mains, services, and meters. 
  • Ensures crews have resources needed to perform their work including necessary tools and equipment. 
  • Provides emergency response support including taking on the role of On Scene Incident Commander.
  • Leads and coordinates work on special projects or jobs that may be assigned. 
  • Supports VGS climate plan and carbon reduction.
  • Other duties as may be required.

                  

 DESIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE:

  • Demonstrated experience leading highly skilled employees and cultivating high performing teams.
  • Previous utility supervisory experience a plus. (it’s not a requirement if it’s listed as a plus, so desired skills definitely works for this section IMO)
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems, safety regulations, equipment operation, and installation techniques a plus. Or proficient in use of related equipment a plus. 
  • Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another technical field and related experience working within a supervisor role OR a combination of progressive utility experience. 
  • Possesses knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical principles.
  • Maintains knowledge of federal and state pipeline safety and DOT regulations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products with an emphasis on Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continual learning and improvement. Leverages new technology for continuous process improvement. Seeks out new ways of doing things that enhances safety, productivity, and reliability. 
  • Able to problem-solve creatively in a chaotic safety-sensitive work environment.  Must have the ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, think quickly and effectively in emergency situations and provide clear direction. 
  • Recognized history of training and developing team members to successfully meet the goals of the team and company. 
  • Excellent communications skills to effectively interact with employees, management, contractors, venders, customers, and members of the public. 
  • Takes a collaborative approach to accomplishing work. 
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Possesses excellent planning skills to efficiently coordinate and schedule project work on a daily, monthly, and seasonal basis. 
  • Demonstrates a commitment to safety and leads with a high degree of integrity. 
  • Must have an unrestricted driver’s license. 

 

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

  • Position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.
  • Occasionally – Stand; walk; drive; bend; stoop; climb; reach above shoulders; use both hands for simple grasping and object manipulation; lift up to 50 lbs.; work outdoors and be exposed to weather conditions to include extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to calmly handle high pressure situations to include emergencies.
