Facility Locator


The primary responsibility of the Locator is to work independently to safely complete locate requests for VGS underground facilities. Additional responsibilities include updating GIS, as-built maps and collecting information on missing, lost, or unrecorded facilities. As this is an entry position, the candidate will be fully trained and no prior experience is necessary.

• Strong understanding of electromagnetic sensing equipment and its principles.
• Receiving locate requests on a real time basis using a ticket management software.
• Prioritizing and accurately completing the locate requests including documentation following all State and Federal Codes.
• Responding to emergency locate requests in addition to the daily workload.
• Knowledge of Vermont Dig Safe Laws and Regulations is required.
• Identifying all underground VGS facilities such as; valve boxes, locator boxes, and cathodic protection equipment.
• Recognizing and reporting hazardous situations.
• Assuming responsibility for passing and maintaining operator qualifications consistent with the position.
• Collecting data using Surveying equipment or geospatial technologies.
• Working knowledge of ArcGIS Software including field collection apps (ArcGIS Collector) and MicroStation software is desirable.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE? • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, remote phones, tablets, and computers. • Ability to problem solve and analyze operations of all underground facilities and how that relates to their ability to be accurately located. Capacity to think quickly and rationally amidst distractions is essential. • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, construction documents, and VGS records. • Ability to think and act independently and handle potentially difficult situations and conflicts. • Strong attention to detail. • Capable of communicating with a wide range of individuals from supervisors to co-workers to customers of various levels. • Unrestricted, clean Motor Vehicle License is required. Physical Demands/Work Conditions • Position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199. • Regularly – Drive, walk, bend. • Occasionally –Bend; stoop; climb; reach above shoulders; use both hands for simple grasping and object manipulation; lift up to 50 lbs.; work outdoors and be exposed to weather conditions to include extreme temperatures. • Ability to calmly handle high pressure situations to include emergencies.
